Interesting facts
"Rocas de Sena", Aconcagua Valley DO is a new release from the Sena winery, a luxurious red wine crafted from six grape varieties in 2021. The wine is named after the rocky soils of the Aconcagua Valley, a tribute to the winery's respect for the terroir's uniqueness. This type of soil imparts unique characteristics to the wine, while large volcanic stones reflect the vineyard's cohesive landscape. The release of Sena's second wine aims to continue exploring the expression of terroir through unique grapes from selected vineyard blocks and the addition of Mediterranean varieties that thrive in the Aconcagua Valley, adding elegance and youthful freshness to the final wine. Moderately cool temperatures in 2021 contributed to the slow and smooth ripening of the grapes. During this season, from May to October, average rainfall allowed the aquifers in the valley to replenish and prepare for the upcoming season. Spring saw historically high air temperatures, promoting ideal fruit set. Summer was slightly cooler and cloudier than in previous years, with light refreshing rains (9 mm). Such conditions ensured gentle ripening of healthy grapes. By the end of March, moderately warm days allowed the grapes to reach perfect maturity. The 2021 vintage will be remembered as exceptional, with ideal conditions. Grapes were harvested from mid-March to mid-April, starting with Grenache and finishing with Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Grenache was primarily fermented in stainless steel tanks and concrete eggs, then aged separately before blending. After fermentation, the wine aged for 22 months in 95% French oak barrels (40% new) and 5% concrete eggs. Bottled in February 2023. The 2021 vintage showcases exceptional aromatic purity and precision, with refreshing acidity and silky tannins, an extraordinary linear taste, according to Juan Carlos Paguola.
About the Manufacturer
In Spanish, the word "sena" is rich in meaning and signifies a distinctive mark or personal signature. The Vina Sena winery, founded in 1995, is a unique "distinguishing mark" of Chile, producing unique wines that have become icons of Chilean winemaking. During his first visit to Chile in 1990, Robert Mondavi recognized the great potential of Chilean terroir for producing fine wines. During his visit, he met Eduardo Chadwick, whose winery "Vina Errazuriz", established in 1870, has been producing quality Chilean wines for over a century. They discovered a shared passion for wine and both adhered to a philosophy of striving for excellence in winemaking. Thus, they formed a partnership that resulted in the production of world-class wine called "Sena". The Vina Sena vineyards cover an area of 350 hectares and are located 41 km from the Pacific Ocean, in the Aconcagua Valley. The vineyards are planted on hills with a northeast exposure at an altitude of 290-500 meters. The soils are well-drained, consisting of gravel, stones, and clay.
