Interesting facts
Domaine Arlaud, Morey-Saint-Denis AOC is a red dry wine made using biodynamic methods from Pinot Noir grapes. The vines grow in clay-limestone soils of the Morey-Saint-Denis appellation. Since 1998, horse plowing and natural fertilizers have been practiced in the vineyard. The harvest is conducted by hand. At the winery, the berries are sorted on a sorting table and leaves are removed. Fermentation with regular remontage and pigeage occurs at controlled temperatures. Maceration lasts for 22 days. The wine is aged for 14-18 months in oak barrels, of which 25% are new. Bottling is done without fining and filtration according to the lunar phases.
About the Manufacturer
The history of Domaine Arlaud began when Joseph Arlaud married a Burgundy native, Renée Amiot, during World War II. The wedding gift from Renée's relatives was invaluable vineyards, where Joseph spent all his time from 1949 to 1970, working with the vines. In 1966, he acquired the old "Grenier à sel" cellar in Nuits-Saint-Georges. This remarkable 14th-century cellar became the emblem of the winery and is still depicted on the labels. Hervé Arlaud succeeded his father in 1982 and expanded the estate's holdings. "...Modern agriculture can have a negative impact on the environment. We must preserve the uniqueness of the soil that has been cultivated for centuries. In 1999, we completely stopped using herbicides. This greatly affects soil life and pollutes groundwater. Thus, we significantly reduced the impact of chemicals on our vineyards," says Hervé Arlaud. In 2004, all 15 hectares of vineyards were fully converted to organic farming. In 2007, the company received the "Qualité France" certification, marking the first step in establishing a biological estate. In 2009, the adaptation of biodynamic methods began in the vineyards. This complex process involves using special preparations (cow manure, silicon dioxide, compost, etc.). The goal is to restore the soil and seek balance between the vineyards and other plants, which are no longer destroyed. In 2013, Cyprien Arlaud took full control of the management of the family estate. By that time, the area of his vineyards had grown to 15 hectares, consisting of 19 separate plots. Since 2014, the wines of Domaine Arlaud have been officially certified as organic and biodynamic.
